A mass fire safety drill programme was conducted for all categories of staff working in Jipmer to ensure that stringent fire safety norms are in place for a safe working environment and patient care services at all levels of functioning of the hospital.

The fire evacuation and mock drill drive held between February 13 and 17 culminated with a major fire drill at the Jipmer ground on Saturday.

According to Dr. S.C. Parija, Jipmer Director, the drill was held in compliance with the government stipulation that basic training for fire safety is a mandatory requirement for all the employees of the institution which was handling over 10,000 patients and public every day, apart from being an administrative hub for around 7,000 employees of various categories on campus.

The drill was designed to create a safety mind-set amongst the participants and to inculcate a simple yet effective practices.

The participants learned about the mechanism of fire formation, fire prevention practices, dealing with different classes of fire and using portable extinguishers to fight small fires.

The fire safety drill also touched upon all important aspect of people’s behaviour during a fire emergency and the role of lead Coordinators/Emergency Response Team members during such situations.

The exercise was led by a team including Dr. Parija, Dr J Balachander, Medical Superintendent, Jipmer, Mukundan, Fire safety Officer, Puducherry Government, the Fire Safety and Preparedness Committee, Jipmer.
