Indira Gandhi High School wins Paris science contest

Make Science Competition is an international children’s science research programme organised by the University of Paris

Students of Indira Gandhi High School in Katterikuppam bagged the first place in the 11th edition of the Make Science Competition. Called the ‘Faites de la science’, the Make Science competition is conducted by the University of Paris, South 11, Orsay (Université Paris-Sud 11) and the Pondicherry Science Forum (PSF) in association with the Directorate of School Education and the Department of Science, Technology and Environment (DSTE).

At least 12 projects from schools in Bahour, Murungampakkam, Panithittu, Manapettu, Katterikuppam and Mudaliarpet were shortlisted for the project. Dr. Christine Paulin, Dean, Faculty of Sciences, University of Paris, South 11, France announced the results through a live video conference from France, held at the Conference Hall in Directorate of School Education on Wednesday.

Raghunath. T.P, Coordinator, Make Science Programme, Pondicherry Science Forum, said that this year about 46 project proposals were sent to the University of Paris.

12 projects selected

“Out of this, they selected 12 projects for the pre-finals. These projects were video-documented by Pondicherry Science Forum and were sent to France for evaluation.

Out of the 12 projects, one first prize and three second prizes were announced by the jury of experts. The project, ‘Knowing our Sun and Earth’ submitted by the students of Indira Gandhi Government High School, Katterikuppam, with the guidance of their teacher S. Rajkumar won the first prize.

The second prize went to Theerar Sathyamurthy Government Higher Secondary School, Murungapakkam for their project ‘Plant pellets to kill mosquito larvae’ and Government High School, Pannithittu, for the project ‘Power Sustainability in Villages’ and special second prize by children’s jury to ‘Resource Recycling Ultra Rapid Composting and Vermicomosting of Food Waste’ project done by Savarayalu Nayagar Government Girls High School.

The Make Science Competition is an international children’s science research programme organised by the University of Paris, for school children across France and some European countries for the last 11 years and the international edition has also been extended to Puducherry. The competition is exclusively being organised for students of government schools in Puducherry.
