Indian Navy Band proves to be a big hit with audience

The beach-front concert featured local and international fan favourite songs

The trumpet, brass ensemble and guitar riffs synced up in the stealthy 007 tune and conjured up images of the fictional super-spy during a performance by the Indian Navy Band on the beach front.

Hour-long serenade

The band was back in the city with its lilting combo of martial music, overtures and classical concertos as well as instrumental versions of popular film songs, especially Tamil hits. The hour-long concert by an over 30-musician ensemble was conducted by Lt. Jayabal Padmanabhan.

Within minutes of settling down after the ‘fanfare’ bit based on the trumpet-driven A-Team theme as a concert opener, the band produced ample evidence of why it was rated highly by national and international audiences. The band performed a Mission Impossible and Ghostbusters medley to the delight of the audience that cut across various age groups.

The classic concert pieces included Cornfield Rock, Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White, cornet and xylophone solos, duet and trio expositions. After impressive renditions of Pour some sugar on me by Def Leppard, Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water and UpTown Funk by Bruno Mars, the band turned on the local flavour.

Best for last

The audience had swelled on the beach by the time the band began to essay a couple of hits from A.R. Rahman’s oeuvre.

If the compositions such as Tamizha Tamizha and Jai Ho that had sections of the crowds singing along, the dizzyingly fast-paced Guleba song brought out the Prabhu Deva in some. The band seemed to have reserved its best for last with the Petta theme song rendition driving the crowd berserk.

By the time the concert was over, the Indian Navy Band had enhanced its reputation of carrying versatility as its hallmark in a remarkable journey from a humble beginning with a handful of musicians to a globally renowned orchestra ensemble.
