India and China share enduring cultural links, says ex-diplomat

India possesses considerable soft power and cultural diplomacy to strengthen its presence on the global stage, former diplomat Bhaswati Mukherjee has said.

Alluding to the recent summit at Mamallapuram between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a lecture at the recent Foundation Day of Pondicherry University, Ms. Mukherjee said India and China shared enduring cultural links.

Ms. Mukherjee, who has served an Indian Ambassador to the Netherlands, Permanent Delegate to the UNESCO and held several senior positions in the Ministry of External Affairs, also referred to the Buddhist circuit and the Ramayana circuit to underscore the importance of culture in integrating society and heritage.

Pondicherry University Vice-Chancellor Gurmeet Singh underscored the importance of Indian soft power and said that people to people cultural connect helps to reduce disparity and conflict. Venkata Raghotham, programme coordinator and Panch Ramalingam, Associate Professor, Human Resource Development Centre also spoke.
