Illegal liquor-making unit busted

Raid is part of ongoing vigil by officials of Excise Department

A special team of the Excise Department busted an illegal liquor-making unit functioning out of a house on the border of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

The raid is part of ongoing vigil by officials of the Excise Department on illegal distilleries and taking steps to prevent illegal production of liquor, hoarding and smuggling of liquor. Recently the top officials had directed the special team to conduct a raid on the said premise following a tip-of about the illegal activity.

Subsequently, the team headed by the Deputy Commissioner Abel Rossario conducted the raid around Thirukkanur area near the Tamil Nadu border.

The team tracked down the illegal liquor-making unit to a house at Mariamman Koil Street, Andiyarpalayam.

Apprehended

The team apprehended D. Saravanan (40) who was running the illicit liquor unit in his house and recovered raw materials used for making liquor. Fake labels, corks, carton boxes and a dyeing machine were seized from him.

Deputy Commissioner Abel Rossario said the accused was making illicit liquor at the house and bottling up as leading brands.

“Our initial investigation revealed that he pumped the illicit liquor into the Tamil Nadu market. He has been selling them as Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) brands in the bars attached to retail shops of Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation.

Investigations on

Mr. Rossario also added that the investigation is on to ascertain whether any other persons were involved in connection with the present incident.

The accused was arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
