“I was Union Minister and I very well know the procedure as to how a foreign visit would be approved for anyone, including people’s representatives”

Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Thursday made a veiled attack on Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi who had questioned his recent Singapore visit and said that he was answerable only to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind in so far as his visit was concerned.

Speaking at the Silver jubilee celebrations of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research (RIVER), Mr. Narayanasamy said that those who are criticising his visit are basically not interested in ensuring development of Puducherry and also in investment by overseas entrepreneurs for infrastructure development.

Stating that the critics of his visit were only airing their views out of a short-sighted mindset and without understanding the actual facts, he said, “I am answerable only to the Prime Minister and the President in so far as my visit and also in getting approval from them. Let there be no other voice against my visit,” he said.

He said he only wished that everyone must do his or her duty without interfering in the work of others. “I was a Union Minister and I very well know the procedure as to how a foreign visit would be approved for anyone, including people’s representatives,” he said.

“When I was a Union Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry had given approval for several persons including Chief Ministers and Ministers. There is little truth in the criticisms against me by those who are not interested in the development of Puducherry,” he said.

Mr. Narayanasamy said that an agricultural university would come up in Puducherry integrating the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of Agriculture and Research Institute in Karaikal.

The government was keen on improving the quality of education in the Union Territory and about 7 % of the budgetary allocation has been made for education sector this year although the Centre did not come to the rescue in granting funds. The UT has also been ranked sixth place among all States in higher education at the All India level, he said.

The Chief Minister also appealed to the faculty of RIVER to concentrate on research and also to ensure adequate production of milk so that Puducherry can be saved of the need to procure milk from neighbouring States.

PWD Minister A. Namassivayam, Members of Parliament V. Vaithilingam (Lok Sabha) N. Gokulakrishnan (Rajya Sabha), MLA E. Theepainthan, Secretary to Education A. Anbarasu and Dean of RIVER S. Ramkumar were present.
