To adopt a resolution condemning Karnataka’s move to build a dam at Mekedatu

A one-day session of the Legislative Assembly will be held on Friday to pass a resolution condemning Karnataka’s move to build a dam across the Cauvery at Mekedatu.

The House will commence its proceedings at 10 a.m. with obituary references to leaders, including former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, former Union Minister Ananth Kumar, former Secretary General of United Nations Kofi Annan and former MLAs from the Union Territory.

The Chief Minister will move a Bill related to the Goods and Services Tax and inform the House the assent given by the Lt. Governor to meet enhancing pension for former legislators. The House will be informed about the assent given by the President on amendments to Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Bill. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had announced its decision to move an adjournment motion seeking discussion on non-spending of money set aside in the current Budget for grant-in aid and salary to employees in government undertakings.

The party wanted to discuss the administrative paralysis due to the power struggle between the Chief Minister and Lt. Governor. Party would insist on discussing the issues before taking up a resolution on Mekadatu.

Nominated MLAs

The Friday session would be the first one after the Supreme Court had upheld the appointment of three BJP leaders as nominated members of the House. The BJP had demanded a three-day session of the house.

It will be interesting to see how the nominated MLAs respond to the move by the ruling Congress, the AIADMK and the DMK to move a resolution condemning the Centre for giving permission to Karnataka government to prepare a detailed project report for constructing the Mekadatu dam.

As far as the Principal Opposition party, the All India N.R. Congress, its strength had come down to 7 after one of its MLAs Ashok Anand lost his seat following conviction by a Special Court of the Central Bureau of Investigation in a disproportionate asset case.
