Hands-on training in orthopaedic technique

Session focussed on Ilizarov principles

The Jipmer department of Orthopaedics, in association with the department of Anatomy, organised the first cadaveric course on ‘Ilizarov-principles and techniques” on Saturday.

Jipmer is conducting this cadaveric course to re-emphasise the principles and techniques of the Ilizarov method, widely used in orthopaedic surgery in the treatment of correction of deformities with a high degree of success, said Dr. S.C. Parija, Director, Jipmer.

Dr. Parija, who launched the programme in the presence of Dr. Dilip Kumar, Patro Deputy Director, Administration/Senior professor in Orthopaedics, observed that while the Ilizarov technique was an age old technique it was being used in a versatile manner even for complex surgeries these days.

The launch was followed by sessions on basis of Ilizarov technique, clinical application of Ilizarov technique, clinical case presentation and panel discussion.

Precision skills

According to organising secretaries Dr. Suresh Gandhi, Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics and Dr.Gladwin, Associate Professor of Anatomy, this course would enhance the precision skills required for an accurate outcome. The session targeted the postgraduates of orthopaedic fraternity in and around the Union Territory.

The uniqueness in this kind of course is that the delegates get hands-on experience in Ilizarov methods — a first of its kind in Puducherry.

Dr. Deep Sharma, Head of Department /Additional professor of Orthopaedics, Department of Orthopaedics and Dr. K. Aravindhan, Head of Orthopaedics Department provided participants an overview of the course and its objectives.

Various resource persons from in and around south India shared their knowledge on this technique.
