Group of supporters takes up a student’s cause

June 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

Supporters of a student marched into the office of the principal at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Girls Higher Secondary School in Mission Street, alleging the school was unfair to the student in denying admission to Class X.

D. Harini is a student at the Uppalam branch of the school. Her father, Devaraj, said, “Harini has been a student of the school from kindergarten. Classes for the new academic year (Class X) began almost a month ago, and we paid the fees. Harini was attending classes, when she was told on Saturday that she had failed in Class IX, and must therefore leave the school. The teachers told her she can join some tutorial college or try at the school’s Ariankuppam branch. We were never informed before that Harini had failed.”

Mr. Devaraj and the supporters claimed that Harini fared poorly because she was attending NCC camps for which she was sent by the school and missed classes for around 75 days in the academic year. The supporters further claimed that the school was acting in such a manner so that they can get a 100 per cent pass result in the SSLC board exam next year. After shouting slogans against the school management and decrying the state of school education, the supporters made their way into the school where they met the principal of the main school branch at Mission Street.

Principal Sister Daria responded to the protesters that there had been some confusion regarding Ms. Harini’s performance in the school.
