Govt. will try for seats from pvt. medical colleges

May 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 07:09 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

Acceding to demands of Members of Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Monday said Government would take appropriate action to procure more number of seats from private medical colleges for admission into the category of government quota through Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC).

During the Question Hour, the issue of medical college admission was raised by V.M.C.Sivakumar who also wanted to know whether the government would bring a law stipulating that the private medical colleges to reduce fee structure for economically backward students who were admitted under the government quota seats through CENTAC.

Fee collection

Congress MLA C. Djeacoumar said the government should insist on even the deemed universities collecting the fees fixed by government. K. Lakshminaryanan said the private medical colleges should be asked to surrender 50 per cent of seats to the government.

AIADMK Legislature Party Leader A. Anbalagan said around 287 post graduation seats are available with the private medical colleges in the Union Territory. As per a notification of Medical Council of India (MCI), the colleges should hand over 50 per cent seats to government.

Unable to pursue PG

“So far no college has come forward to surrender the seat to the government. The colleges are collecting Rs.1.5 crore per seat from parents. Hence students of Puducherry are not able to pursue post graduate courses in Puducherry,” Mr. Anbalagan said while seeking the government to take necessary action in this regard.

DMK MLA A.M.H. Nazim said the government should take stringent action against the colleges which failed to part with 50 per cent of seats.

Pointing out that Chief Minister last year had assured that government would procure 50 per cent of PG seats from the private medical colleges, Leader of Opposition V. Vaithilingam wanted to know why the assurance was not implemented so far.

Mr. Vaithilingam said the government should bring special legislation to make private medical colleges to give 50 per cent of seats to the government.

Responding to the views of members, Chief Minister N.Rangasamy said the government would take necessary action to get maximum number of seats from the private medical colleges to be admitted in government quota seats.

He further stated that the government would soon take appropriate action to get post graduate seats for the Puducherry students for the admission under the government quota.
