The government has decided to recruit 520 teachers on contract basis in the Union Territory, Minister for Education R. Kamalakannan said.

Addressing the media persons after releasing the SSLC results, he said the Finance department had given its concurrence to recruit teachers on contract basis. Similarly, another 150 persons, including librarians, physical education teachers, craft teachers and lab assistants , would be appointed on contract basis.

The Minister said the recruitments would be made for pre-primary to secondary levels. He announced the decision to conduct an audit using experts in government schools to ascertain the quality of teaching and infrastructure requirements. Based on the guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission, an audit had been conducted in 22 colleges in the Union Territory. The report would be soon submitted to the Chief Minister, he said.

‘Regular interaction’

Appealing to the government school teachers to put in more efforts to improve academic performance, he said they should have regular interaction with parents. The parent-teacher meeting should be held in villages during evening hours, he said. The department had appointed a committee to look into the complaint about a private school that issued transfer certificate to 40 children without any valid reason.

Education Secretary A. Anbarasu said the department had taken steps to improve the quality of teaching in government schools. For the next academic year, the department would, on a daily basis, monitor the activities in schools. Teachers would be asked to report online the day’s activities in schools and also on absentees.
