The reopening day for all schools has been postponed to June 10 because of prevailing heat, Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy said on Friday.

Addressing a press conference here, the Chief Minister said the decision follows request from several quarters, including parents, teachers and students.

The Education department had taken steps to distribute books and uniforms among the children immediately after schools reopened, he added.

About speculation on Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi’s continuance in office, he said refused to comment and said it was up to the Centre to take a decision.

About the election of the new Speaker, he said it was under process. On the issue of raising the retirement age for college lecturers, the Chief Minister said the Cabinet would decide on the subject.

Central schemes

Mr. Narayanasamy, who returned to the city on Friday morning after attending the swearing-in ceremony of National Democratic Alliance government in New Delhi, said he expected the Prime Minister to take all the State governments along.

The Chief Minister said his government had implemented most of the Central schemes. The government would continue to implement schemes mooted by the NDA, he said.

The main demand before the Centre was about according full Statehood to the Union Territory and allocation of more funds. The government had requested the Centre to waive off legacy loan, the Chief Minister said.

Minister for Education R. Kamalakannan and Government whip R.K.R. Anantharaman were present.
