The Opposition AIADMK has accused the ruling Congress in the Union Territory of indulging in doublespeak on the hydrocarbon issue.

AIADMK legislature party leader A. Anbalagan told presspresons here on Tuesday that the Congress government in Puducherry had let Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) drill wells in Yanam, an enclave of the Union Territory in Andhra Pradesh, to augment supply of gas.

Mr. Anbalagan said that while there was support for the drilling operations in Yanam, the government headed by V. Narayanasamy had been protesting as far as proposal for drilling for hydrocarbons in Puducherry and Karaikal regions was concerned.

The AIADMK is basically against drilling of wells anywhere in the Union Territory but the Congress government was indulging in doublespeak and this was only an attempt to hoodwink the people, he said.

Mr. Anbalagan scoffed at Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy’s comments yesterday that any elected MLA shifting allegiance from the party on which he had been elected to the Opposition would face the same fate as was seen in Karnataka.

Is Mr. Narayanasamy hinting at his partymen who were potential defectors and hence the shadow of doubt had now been cast on the Congress legislators here, he asked.

Pradesh Congress Committee president A. Namassivayam should seek an explanation from the Chief Minister as to whom he meant by possible defectors. This only showed that the Congress government lacked stability, he added.
