Four women MLAs in UT after 15 years

Four women have managed to enter the 30-member Legislative Assembly after a gap of nearly 15 years. Interestingly, three of them have been elected from reserved constituencies in Puducherry and Karaikal regions. While as many as 21 women were in the fray in the 2016 Assembly elections, four women, including one each from the Congress and the DMK, and two from the AINRC managed to win the elections. The MLAs are B. Kobiga (Thirubhuvanai) and Chandirapriyanga (Nedungadu) from the AINRC, V. Vizeaveny (Nettapakkam) and A. Geetha (Neravy T.R. Pattinam). Ms. Chandirapriyanga, daughter of former Agriculture Minister M. Chandrakasu, who was elected from Nedungadu in the 2011 elections, managed to retain the seat. Mr. Chandrakasu had opted out of the poll battle citing health reasons. She defeated her immediate rival A. Marimuthu of the Congress by a margin of 1094 votes.
