The Puducherry government is focussing its attention on preventive policing to ensure that culprits are caught in the nascent stage and brought to book, Lieutenant Governor A.K. Singh has said.

Speaking to reporters after inspecting the infrastructure at the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital at Kathir Gamam here on Wednesday, Mr. Singh said that he was concerned over law and order and even a single serious crime was not acceptable. “The aim of any government should be to make sure that law and order is maintained. And the law-abiding citizen should feel that he can go about his business fearlessly.’’ Mr. Singh said that he had been holding meetings with the Chief Secretary and the Inspector General of Police to review the law and order situation. Law and order is also a societal issue and there is a need to have one or two seminars on the issue.

“We need to develop societal and moral pressure that people should not take this step and we need to enrol women on our side in this whole effort,” he said.

Replying to a question on policemen accused in the child prostitution racket, he said that the law is taking its course and the government will ensure that it is done in a reasonable time. Earlier the Lieutenant Governor said that the government would soon try to meet out the infrastructural requirements in the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital. The government has a large commitment to other institutions and a long-term perspective is required for the development of the institution, he said.
