As part of Fire Safety Week observance, Pondicherry University’s Electrical Wing organised basic awareness programmes at four locations on the campus.

The programme has highlighted the need of the fire safety, proper usage of portable extinguishers, and other fire fighting equipment and trained the participants to use portable extinguishers, a press note said.

Gurmeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor, said this was the first time that the university was observing fire safety week and conducting a workshop.

Life-saving skills

Recalling the properties damaged during a previous fire accident on the campus, the Vice-Chancellor wanted everyone to remember that safeguarding life and property was a collective responsibility. He said such exercises would be held every year.

R. Rithosh Chandra, assistant divisional fire officer, Pondicherry Region, said that exposure to such a programme would be useful not only here but wherever the participants went.

The team led by him explained to the participants the types of fire, how to handle the situation and proper usage of the portable extinguishers. Staff and students extinguished mock fires during the drills with portable extinguishers of various kinds.
