Faculty, student’s forum demand resignation of V-C

Faculties and student forum have demanded the resignation of the Pondicherry University Vice Chancellor Chandra Krishnamurthy. It follows the Madras High Court pulling up the university for having handled a sexual harassment complaints of two girl students in an improper manner.

On September 30, 2013, M. Kavya and Vidya T. Appukuttan, lodged a complaint with the vice-chancellor. They had stated that when they were walking towards the mess in the university, two senior students passed snide comments, used abusive words and threatened to assault them and rape them. The university placed the two victim students under suspension for the even semester. Hence, the two approached the Madras High Court for revoking the suspension. Last week, the Madras High Court set aside the orders of the university. The court said, “The handling of their complaints by the university has made the remedy worse than the disease and added insult to injury.

Reacting to the outcome of verdict, the girl students said they were greatly relieved of the mental agony.

Ms. Kavya said, “I am happy and thankful to the support of students. We under went mental torture because of the happenings. We were unable to attend classes or write exam. The verdict makes us heave a sigh of relief.” Ms. Vidya also expressed her happiness over the judgement.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, Students Federation of India (SFI) local unit secretary A. Anand said the V-C should resign owning moral responsibility to the improper handling of the issue.

Meanwhile, the Pondicherry University Teachers Associationc(PUTA) also asked demanded the resignation of Prof. Chandra.

In a letter to vice-chancellor, the PUTA called the court verdict as a judicial blow to the V-C and the university in the sexual harassment case filed by students who not only suffered by the perpetrators but more agonisingly in the hands of the V-C.

“PUTA also demands that the V-C should resign taking moral responsibility for mishandling the case”, the association said.

They added that it would therefore be the honorable course for the V-C to show grace and come forward to convey regret / apology to the two students who have suffered for more than a year mentally, financially and academically.
