The Puducherry unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged the Union government to evolve an action plan for rehabilitation and modernisation of the century old Anglo French Textiles (AFT) mills.
Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, BJP Puducherry unit president M. Visweswaran said that the party had made a detailed representation to the Union Textiles Ministry seeking a rehabilitation package for the mill which remains defunct for more than two years.
Mr. Visweswaran said the centre should give permission to the Puducherry government to sell land belonging to AFT mills at Pattanur in Tamil Nadu.
The sale proceeds could be used for meeting the expenditure of the mill for its restoration. The Puducherry government had also urged the centre in this regard and sought sanction of funds.
The BJP has urged the centre to start Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in Puducherry so that employment opportunities are created.
Asked about the recent protests against Sri Aurobindo Ashram, he said that the Ashram should be put in order and its administration should be transparent. He hoped that the centre would take necessary steps in this regard.
