Around 3. 5 lakh domestic consumers of the Electricity Department in the Union Territory will have to shell out more money for their monthly bill starting this month as the enhanced power tariff has come into force from April 1.

In January, the department had proposed a hike in the range of 35 paise a unit to meet the revenue gap projection of around ₹478.04 crore for the current fiscal while retaining the regulatory surcharge of 5%.

While the department has retained the monthly fixed charge of ₹40 in the 0-100 unit slabs for the domestic category, the fee has been increased from ₹1.50 per kWh to ₹1.90 per kWh. For the 101-200 units per month category, the tariff has been enhanced from ₹2.60 per kWh to ₹2.75 per kWh.

The tariff remained unchanged for those consuming 200-300 and above 300 units per month. The fixed monthly charges for those consuming 101-200, 200-300 and above 300 units remained unchanged at ₹45 per month.

In the commercial category, the fixed monthly charge remains unchanged at ₹75 per month in the 0-100, 101-250 and above 250 units per month consumption categories. The power tariff for High Tension Commercial (for contract demand up to 5,000 kVA) has been hiked from ₹5.45 per kVAh to ₹ 5.50 per kVAh.

Almost all political parties have opposed the hike in tariff. The AIADMK on Saturday submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister seeking his immediate intervention to stop the hike in power bill.

Secretary, East, A. Anbalagan said the hike in tariff while people are facing economic hardship would adversely impact their monthly budget. The Chief Minister should prevail upon the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission to withdraw the hike, the memorandum said.
