Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi on Friday said the political leadership should be seriously worried about the water table situation in Puducherry.

Reacting The Hindu report “Aquifers at risk as people dig deeper for water” published on Friday, the Lieutenant Governor, in a communication, said politicians should work on water conservation measures in their respective constituencies. The political class should not depend only on investments related to water conservation measures, she said.

The Lieutenant Governor added that they should focus on human endeavour and voluntary contribution for preservation of water.

“Or else people will not forget and forgive them. In fact, they might punish them by not voting for them,” Ms. Bedi said.

Development Commissioner A. Anbarassu would make public water tables in each area very fortnight, Ms. Bedi said.

Plea to farmers

Urging farmers to realise the water scarcity situation, the Lieutenant Governor said the agricultural community should take every step possible to conserve water.

“They must use all possible conservation methods to save water.

By crop substitution or drip irrigation, they should establish water harvesting facilities in their field,” she suggested.

The rural community, educational institutions, resident welfare associations, NGOs and officials should take it as an endeavour to conserve water, the Lieutenant Governor added.
