There is no economic development and critics face I-T raids, says CPI leader

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has charged the Election Commission with adopting a biased approach in the byelections from the Nanguneri and Vikravandi Assembly constituencies.

CPI State secretary R. Mutharasan told presspersons that while all the poll graffiti and other publicity materials in Nanguneri were being erased, nothing of that sort had been done in Vikravandi. The Election Commission had failed to take action against poll graffiti of the AIADMK in Vikravandi.

Mr. Mutharasan said the first Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had introduced several pioneering measures in various sectors. He was chiefly instrumental in creating the public sector undertakings (PSUs) and described them as the temples of development. But the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre had been resorting to disinvestment of central share in PSUs and this had been proven by reducing the number of public sector banks from 27 to 12. There was no economic development and whoever was raising an accusing finger against the Centre was subjected to raids by Income Tax Department. Mr. Mutharasan said: “If one asked such questions, the Centre will invoke Sedition Act against them. But I am neither bothered nor worried of any such action,” he said.
