: G. Jayaraj, former Executive Director (Medical Services) and Advisor of Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC), has been honoured with the Fellow of the Year award at the 65th national meet of Indian Association of Occupational Health (IAOH) held here recently in recognition of his contribution towards employees’ health care.

Mr. Jayaraj who has over three-and-a-half decades of experience in occupational health in NLC and other industries has published two books ‘Occupational Health Practice in Indian Industries’ and ‘Jay’s Text book of Occupational Diseases’.

Mr. Jayaraj said that labour laws had made it compulsory for industries to establish Occupational Health Centres and to appoint qualified doctors from this discipline.

The needs of industries are totally different and doctors practising medicine in industries need to understand the basics of industrial philosophy, culture, organisational behaviour, labour legislations and the corporate commitment towards the social responsibility of the workforce.

Industrial health practice involves less of medicine and more of employees counselling and assists industries in promoting a health workforce, he added.
