DMK likely to demand over 12 seats from Congress

Alliance between the two parties was firmed up last week

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Puducherry unit is likely to demand over 12 seats from Congress which is heading the alliance in the Union Territory.

Following the meeting of senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and DMK president M.Karunanidhi last Saturday, the alliance between two parties was firmed up in Tamil Nadu and Union Territory of Puducherry. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Treasurer M.K.Stalin has instructed the local office bearers of the party in the Union Territory to begin talks with leaders of the Puducherry Congress Committee shortly on seat-sharing and identifying winning constituencies.

According to sources, following the firming up of alliance between two parties in Chennai, the leaders of both parties have commenced informal discussions on seat-sharing. In the coming days, they will hold formal talks and are expected to decide before the week end.

During last Assembly polls, the Congress-DMK combine forged alliance with Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). Then DMK was allotted 10 seats, PMK- 2 and VCK- 1 while Congress contested in 17 seats.

During 2011 Assembly polls, Congress- DMK alliance won nine seats.

Congress bagged seven seats while the DMK got only two.

A DMK leader said, “We may get one or two seats more than last time. There will not any hitch in seat sharing. We may come to a conclusion before February 27. On that day, our party leaders will interview the aspirants who seek to contest election on party tickets.”
