The death of a 20-year-old woman in a freak accident at a private factory in the industrial estate at Thattanchavady on Saturday sparked a protest by relatives of the victim on Sunday.

According to the police, the victim Karthika, daughter of Usharani of Subbiah Nagar in Thattanchavady was working in a private factory manufacturing mosquito repellent mats in the estate.

Died on way to hospital

On Saturday Karthika was in the factory when her dupatta got entangled in a machine. The cloth was pulled into the machine and the victim suffered severe injuries.

She died on the way to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER).

The death of Karthika set off a public protest led by her family members and relatives who blocked traffic on the arterial Tindivanam Road on Sunday.

They refused to receive the body after the post-mortem. They demanded a thorough probe into the accident.

The protestors alleged foul play in the incident and said that the management informed the victim’s family about her death only late in the evening.

They also demanded adequate compensation to the next of kin of the victim and to ensure security for workers in the premises.

The agitators also demanded the police to book a case against the management.

Police personnel intervened and pacified the protesters following which they withdrew their protest and dispersed.
