CPI(M) seeks probe into attacks on Dalits

Party says violence against Dalits rising

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) has demanded a judicial probe, by a retired judge of the Madras High Court, into the brutal assault on the Dalit family of three at Vellamputhur near Tirukovilur in the district.

CPI(M) State secretary K. Balakrishnan told reporters on Friday that there had been a rise in the number of attacks on Dalits in Villupuram in the last few years.

Referring to the Vellamputhur incident, Mr. Balakrishnan said Samayan, 13, was brutally murdered while his mother and sister had been admitted to hospital in an unconscious state. Similarly, two youths were killed in an attack at Vasantha Krishnapuram while another was admitted to hospital.

Alleging bias by the Villupuram police in the case of Vasantha Krishnapuram attack, Mr. Balakrishnan said the police had conducted kangaroo court.
