Protest against non-supply of rice and wheat to cardholders

Activists of the Communist Party of India (CPI) laid siege to a fair price shop at Pudupet near Lawspet on Monday to register their strong protest against the government for having failed to supply free rice and wheat to cardholders for the past few months.

K. Sethu Selvam, state committee member of the CPI said that though Chief Minister N. Rangasamy had announced that free rice would be distributed to all beneficiaries without break it had not been supplied to cardholders in Pudupet.

He claimed that free rice and wheat were distributed only in PDS outlets located in the Chief Minister’s constituency and Ministers constituencies while cardholders in other areas had been left in the lurch. People from below poverty line families are dependent on supply of rations from these outlets, he said.

Locked the shop

At one stage, the protestors led by Mr. Sethu Selvam locked the ration shop after asking the sales personnel to leave the area.

They shouted slogans against the government and handed over the keys of the fair price shop to the sales personnel asking the immediate presence of officials of the Civil Supplies Department for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.
