Teaching staff of the government-run Pondicherry Cooperative College of Education staged a sit-in protest in the premises on Wednesday demanding immediate payment of pending salaries for the last 13 months.
A spokesperson of the Puducherry Cooperative College of Education Teachers Welfare Association said that despite several reminders, the government had not addressed the grievances of the teaching staff.
The Cooperative Department, which administers the college, has not disbursed salary to the teaching staff for the last 13 months. The department has also not paid the Contributory Provident Fund to the staff for the last 27 months despite the fact that the college has been collecting ₹51,000 from each student every academic year.
An assistant professor on condition of anonymity said that classes too had not commenced for as many as 32 first year students in the college due to the protest by teaching staff. The government’s move was “disappointing”, the association said.
