The Puducherry Assembly on Friday passed separate resolutions urging the Union Government to convert Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) into a Medical University, set up a High Court and Public Service Commission.
Congress member K. Lakshminaryanan, who moved a private member resolution to press for the demand for converting Jipmer into a Medical University, said it would immensely benefit students studying in private and government medical colleges in the Union Territory.
Once it was converted as a University, medical colleges can be affiliated to Jipmer and the students can obtain graduation certificate. Besides, Jipmer would be eligible for funding from the University Grants Commission.
Moving a separate resolution demanding setting up of a High Court, Mr. Lakshminarayanan and Independent legislator V. Ramachandran said the people of the Union Territory faced enormous hardship as they had to travel to Chennai for attending court proceedings. Both contended that many smaller States with less population had established High Courts.
AIADMK member Vaiyapuri Manikandan moved another resolution seeking a separate Commission for recruitment of group ‘A’ and ‘B’ posts.
Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy requested the Chair to treat all three resolutions as government resolutions.
