Congress will retain Puducherry LS seat: PCC chief

‘No decision taken on giving the seat to DMK’

Minister for Public Works and Pradesh Congress Committee chief A. Namassivayam has dismissed reports of the Congress parting the Puducherry Lok Sabha seat to its alliance partner, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

“No such decision has been taken. It is our natural seat,” he told The Hindu on the sidelines of birthday celebrations of Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy at the PCC office.

Mr. Namassivayam said as party chief, he would “insist” on retaining the seat. The Congress was fully prepared to face the Lok Sabha elections with its alliance partners. “We are fully prepared and will bag the seat from the All India N.R. Congress. Why should we give away our seat?” he asked.

In the last parliamentary elections, AINRC candidate R. Radhakrishnan defeated Congress candidate V. Narayanasamy by a margin of 60, 854 votes.

All India Congress Committee general secretary and in-charge for party affairs in the Union Territory Mukul Wasnik would visit Puducherry and announce the names of new district presidents and block presidents, Mr. Namassivayam said.

The AICC had approved names of four district presidents and 30 block presidents.

On the local body polls, Mr. Namassivayam, who also holds the Local Administration portfolio, said the Cabinet had cleared the appointment of State Election Commission. “The file has been put up for approval by the Lt. Governor,” he said.

The Congress would fight the local body polls in alliance with the DMK and other parties.

Earlier in the day, Mr Namassivayam, along with Social Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy, took part in the birthday celebrations of Mr. Narayanasamy. The Chief Minister is away at Mookambika Temple, Karnataka, and will return only on Wednesday night.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chairperson of United Progressive Alliance Sonia Gandhi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi were among those greeted the Chief Minister on his birthday.
