Narayanasamy stresses on the need for creating awareness about the rule among two-wheeler riders

A day after the police announced their decision to enforce the helmet rule for two-wheeler riders from Monday, Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy has asked the department to implement the rule in a phased manner.

Shortly after meeting Director-General of Police S. Sundari Nanda and Transport Secretary H.K.S. Sran on Sunday, the Chief Minister told reporters that he had directed the officials to go slow on the rule.

Step-by-step approach

“It should be implemented step by step along with an awareness campaign. People should be told about the importance of wearing helmet,” he said.

Conceding for the first time that the officers were caught in the power struggle between him and Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi, the Chief Minister said: “I will not blame the officials. They were being threatened by the Lt. Governor to obey her orders.”

The announcement by the police on Saturday that the helmet rule would be enforced from Monday had led to speculation that it was being done under pressure from the Raj Nivas, especially after the Chief Minister on February 4 directed the department to enforce the rule incrementally over two months after simultaneously conducting an awareness campaign. .

Public wrath

The Chief Minister said that the government was compelled to put on hold its decision to make helmet wearing mandatory for two-wheeler riders last year because of objections from the public.

The rule made mandatory by the court had to be implemented at one point, he said and added that the government wanted to create awareness among two-wheeler riders about the importance of wearing helmet so that there will be more voluntary compliance.
