Clean Puducherry: Suggestions from various quarters

Residents and elected representatives have expressed their suggestions and criticism on the draft plan unveiled by Puducherry government.

Sunaina Mandeen, a resident of Kurichikuppam who some time ago launched a ‘Clean Neighbourhood campaign’, welcomed the plan of the government though he felt that the plan was not going to work unless the fine for littering in public was strictly enforced and door-to-door garbage collection implemented effectively.

Ms. Sunaina said, “There should be sufficient number of dustbins provided besides having clear-cut solid waste management plan. There should be right infrastructure such as toilets.”

MLA K.Lakshminar-yanan, a strong votary of cleanliness in the city said all plans will remain on paper unless active public participation is ensured. He wondered how the government devised a draft plan without consultation of the elected representatives.

“I have been fighting for clean Puducherry for more than two decades. At present, the city seems to be a hell-hole with piles of garbage and overflowing drains. There is no vision or mission among municipal authorities.

There is no sufficient of kuppai thoti(dust bins) with the municipality). Once I asked them to provide 25 dust bins in my area. They said only five are available. There is no proper plan or holistic approach with government,” Mr. Lakshminaryanan said.

Kirti Chandak, artist and resident of Puducherry said, “A clean environment inspires good health, thoughts and beauty. It is essential to be civilised living where every person can make a difference.

A system needs to be put in place: sorting at source composting bio-waste, thus decreasing garbage by 90 per cent and 10 per cent that remains to be rightly disposed.

Those who violate the cleanliness norms should be taken to task.”
