The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has given its nod to the territorial administration to fix 24 as the minimum age for candidates aspiring to join the police force, Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy said on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference after attending an extended meeting of the Pradesh Congress Committee here, the Chief Minister said last year the Cabinet had decided to increase the age limit from 22 to 24.

The decision did not get favourable approval from the Lieutenant Governor.

Following the dissent expressed by the Lieutenant Governor, the matter was referred to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The government, two days ago, received a communication from the Ministry giving its approval to the Cabinet decision.

As many as 390 vacancies had to be filled at the constable level in the police force, he added.

The government was expecting to receive 0.1 tmcft of Cauvery water for Karaikal region following the order given by the Cauvery Water Management Authority to Karnataka to release 9.19 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu in June.

The Karaikal region received Cauvery water from the quota allotted to Tamil Nadu, the Chief Minister said.

To attend swearing-in

The Chief Minister said he had accepted the invitation from the Prime Minister’s Office for the swearing-in of the National Democratic Alliance government.

He later left for New Delhi via Bengaluru.
