Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials on Tuesday conducted surprise check at the office of the Centralised Admission Committee (Centac) located within the precincts of the Pondicherry Engineering College at Pillaichavady. The surprise check follows complaints of alleged irregularities in admission of students for postgraduate courses in private medical colleges and deemed universities in Puducherry.

Sources said the checks began at 10 a.m. and went on till 7 p.m. A seven-member team from the investigating agency conducted inquiry with the convener, deputy convener and other officials over the admission of students in private colleges.

The team is said to have also seized documents from the office.

Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi, who had earlier requested the CBI to look into the Centac-related complaints of alleged fraud, breach of trust and corruption, in her twitter handle stated that “investigations and inquiry now will establish culpability...”

It was on the request of the LG Office that the CBI had taken up investigations on complaints of fraud, deceit, cheating and breach of trust committed by commercial medical colleges in Puducherry on their own or in connivance with public officials of Centac and others involved directly or indirectly. “The Central vigilance has also requested to inquire into the administrative lapses committed by officers responsible for the proper and fair conduct of PG counselling and allocation of medical seats,” she added.
