Sugarcane farmers attached to the Puducherry Cooperative Sugar Mills on Thursday staged a demonstration near the Legislative Assembly, pressing the government to immediately convene the tri-partite meeting and announce the State Advisory Price for sugarcane for 2014-15.

The farmers, led by Tamil Nadu Sugarcane Farmers Association State president and Vikravandi MLA R. Ramamurthy, took out a procession from the old bus stand to picket the Legislative Assembly. However, the police placed barricades to prevent them from marching towards the Assembly complex.

The protesters raised slogans against the Puducherry government and the mill management and alleged that farmers had not received payment for supply of sugarcane to the Cooperative Sugar Mills at Lingareddypalayam for the past one year.

Private sugar mills in Ariyur in Puducherry also have defied the SAP fixed by the government during the previous years and stuck to Rs. 2,200 per tonne. They also demanded that the territorial administration convene a tripartite meeting and fix the price at Rs. 4,000 per tonne for 2014-15.
