Bus burning: five persons surrender

They turned in at a local court

Five persons involved in the torching of a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus at Kanagachettikulam on the East Coast Road surrendered before a local court here on Monday.

The police gave the names of the accused as Arun of Kuyilapalayam, Augustine Raj of Periya Kalapet, Dharnesh of Bommayarpalayam, Chandrabose of Thandarayankuppam and Muthukumaran of Puducherry.

They allegedly intercepted the Chennai-bound bus at Kanagachettikulam on Sunday night and assaulted the bus crew and poured petrol on the vehicle before setting it on fire.

Narrow escape

The passengers, with the help of the bus crew, escaped through the windows and the main door. The bus was gutted.

The police said a case had been registered against the accused under Sections 143, 147, 148, 341, 435, 323, 324, 353, 307 of Indian Penal Code and 4 of Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 4 of Explosives Act read with Section 149 of Indian Penal Code.
