With Pongal drawing closer in the city markets are crowded with people making last-minute purchases.

The Big Market on Bharathi Street witnessed a brisk sale of sugarcane, turmeric bunches and jaggery on Wednesday.

Sensing the huge demand vendors have made arrangements to bring additional loads of sugarcane and turmeric to markets in the city to continue the sale till Thursday evening.

“Over 10 loads of sugarcane from Tamil Nadu have flooded the Goubert Market here. A bundle of sugarcane costs Rs.400 as compared to Rs.300 last year. Turmeric bunches brought from Erode are sold at Rs.30 to Rs.40 per bunch,” said Arumugam, a vendor from Puducherry.

However, the sale of colourful clay pots has been dull this year as a majority of the people prefer to cook in gas stoves. The practice is to prepare pongal using clay pots. The pots are available from Rs.45 to Rs.150, said Anjalatchi from Villianur.
