Stoutly opposing the decision of the Department of Hindu Religious Institutions, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Puducherry unit, has urged the government to withdraw it immediately.

BJP unit president and MLA M. Visweswaran said, “The decision to dispose of lands belonging to various temples is not acceptable to us. There is no concrete justification to the decision.”

He said there are 243 temples which has properties worth more than Rs. 6000 crore.

Stating that it is the responsibility of the government to protect the land of temples, Mr. Visweswaran said, “The government should not say that encroachers could not be evicted. The decision of the government is tantamount to giving a stamp of approval for illegal acts.”

Sending a memorandum to Lieutenant Governor A.K. Singh, leader of Hindu Munnani unit Sanilkumar sought his immediate intervention in this matter to save the properties belonging to the temples in Puducherry.

Mr. Sanilkumar sought to know what made the officials of the temples to allow the encroachers to encroach upon the lands and why the said officials did not take any action against them.
