Cycling enthusiasts came together on Saturday for a heritage ride to commemorate the 66{+t}{+h}Republic Day celebrations.

Most of the cyclists were well-experienced and hailed from different walks of life.

There was, for instance, Piyush, a garment exporter and a regular cyclist from Chennai who advocates that cycling should become part of everyday life of citizens, Tharrini an M.A. student from IIT Madras, who exhibited all the excitement of being a first-timer and Ennarusu Karunesan, CEO Chennai Container Terminal Ltd, for whom cycling was one of those rare all-weather sports.

The ride, which kicked off in Chennai, crisscrossed heritage sites in the city before concluding at the Bharathi Park. Minister of Tourism P. Rajavelu flagged off the Heritage Ride from Gandhi Square.

The organiser of the event M. Ramanujar of the Cycling Yogis said though he had planned participation of 60 persons, around 70 showed up in support of the cause.

They have been conducting cycle rides since 2012.

The name Cycling Yogis was given to represent the past and thus to promote the heritage places of Puducherry.

Several notable landmarks of the city were covered during the ride which was supported by the Puducherry Tourism Department.
