Terms the coalition opportunistic, vows to defeat it at the hustings

CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and its former general secretary Prakash Karat has described the AIADMK-BJP alliance in Tamil Nadu as a serious threat to the interests of the State and its people.

Speaking at a public meeting at Neyveli near here on Tuesday, he said the CPI(M) would work for the victory of the DMK-led alliance in all the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Stating that the BJP did not have any strength or influence in Tamil Nadu, he said the party’s alliance with the AIADMK was opportunistic. The AIADMK had surrendered its independence and had become a slave of the BJP.

“The CPI(M) will adopt such practices that would maximise the unity of all the anti-BJP forces in all the States and based on that the party has come to an understanding with the DMK in Tamil Nadu,” he said.

Diversionary tactic

Mr. Karat alleged that the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were desperately trying to divert the attention of the people after the Pulwama attack in which 40 CRPF jawans were killed. The BJP was positioning itself as the only party which could protect the country, national security and fight against terrorism.

There had been a series of terrorist attacks in Kashmir and the people in the State were totally alienated today because of the wrong policies adopted by the Narendra Modi headed Government at the Centre. The government had no support among the people and that was providing the opportunity for extremists to launch such attacks, he said.

Mr. Modi had completely failed to stop the alienation of the people of Kashmir. Instead of adopting a political approach to address the issue, the Centre had unleashed “brutal repression” and as a result the extremist forces were gaining ground using the anger of the people.

“So the real culprit for this serious situation that has developed in Kashmir was the approach of the Centre to cover up the issue. They are now pretending as if they are the only ones who can fight terrorism and protect national security while the failure of the Centre is the reason for all the these attacks which are taking place. We have to expose the stand taken by the Narendra Modi government and the BJP on this issue,” he said.
