The district administration has asked licensed owners of arms and ammunitions to surrender their weapons immediately as per the directions of the Election Commission of India.

In a release, District Collector S. Sundaravadivelu said the district administration had invoked Section 144 of the CrPC banning possession and carrying of weapons.

Owners of such weapons are directed to hand over their weapons to the nearest police station and collect an acknowledgement receipt.

The weapons will be returned to them after the end of the elections.

Further, possession and carrying of weapons and articles such as spears, swords, sticks, brickbats, lathis, stones and spades has been banned.

No fresh licences

With a view to eliminating chances of misuse of arms during the general elections, no fresh licence for arms, revolvers and rifles would be given till the completion of the election process, he said.
