Chandra Krishnamurthy, the first woman Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry Central University, was on Monday dismissed from service through an order of the President who is visitor of the institution.

The President’s order, which was formally communicated to the university authorities, brings to a denouement Ms. Krishnamurthy’s controversial tenure, which was rocked by charges that she had misrepresented credentials to get the top post, indulged in plagiarism and governed in authoritarian fashion.

M. Ramachandran, Pondicherry University Registrar-in-charge on Monday, issued a notification that the Government of India, MHRD, Department of Higher Education, Central University Division, had through the order (No. 39-2/2015-Desk (U)) dated July 4, 2016, intimated that the President had in exercise of powers conferred in terms of Section 16 of the General Clauses Act, 1897 dismissed Ms. Krishnamurthy from the post of Vice Chancellor, Pondicherry University, with immediate effect.

Ms. Krishnamurthy was put on compulsory wait on August 22, 2015 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development following an escalation in the agitation by students and a section of faculty demanding her ouster for various misdemeanours.
