Pondicherry Central University has initiated a collaborative research programme with Applied Materials Inc. of the U.S., through an agreement. It is seen as a major step towards university-industry partnership programme.
Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Thursday inaugurated the research laboratory, which was a collaborative research programme. The facilities available in this research laboratory would be useful to carry out research on All-Solid State Thin Film Lithium batteries, bulk lithium batteries, Li-s batteries, Li-air and flow batteries.
The Government of India launched the National Electric Mobility Mission (NEMM) in April, 2015, to promote manufacture and sale of affordable electric vehicles. Under this scheme, a collaborative research and development project “High Energy Density Solid State Lithium Battery”, with an outlay of ₹ 10.44 crore was initiated by the Department of Heavy Industry, Government of India, in which Pondicherry Central University played an important role along with CECRI (CSIR) and Applied Materials (U.S.).
Affordable energy storage device was key to achieving electric mobility. This project was designed to address this issue. The basic work carried out by Ramaswamy Murugan, in the Department of Physics, Pondicherry University, had been instrumental for the collaborative research project.
Minister for Revenue M.O.H.F. Shahjahan, President and Managing Director of Applied Materials India Private Limited Srinivas Satya and Pondicherry Central University Vice-Chancellor Anisa Basheer Khan were present.
