Policing gets software edge

Puducherry, along with Mumbai, is among the first cities in the country to pilot a new software that will help monitoring officers to cut the chaff from the grain and isolate relevant footage, the outgoing IG of Police Praveer Ranjan told journalists at the Raj Nivas on Wednesday.

“What the software essentially does is to cut through hours of idle footage and condense day-long live feeds into a few minutes of relevance,” Mr. Ranjan said.

The software, which has been deployed on a pilot basis to available CCTV installations of the police in the city since Tuesday, also has video editing tools to compose a crime footage for quick sharing with other police jurisdictions, he said.
