Law students from Chennai School of Law and SRM University argue at Court Hall - II in the moot court competition in Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Government Law College in Kalapet on Sunday.

In an effort to hone the skills of law students from across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Dr.B.R. Ambedkar Government Law College in Kalapet organised a three-day moot court competition.

Nearly 60 law students in 20 teams from 17 institutions from across Tamil Nadu including Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Madurai, Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Chennai and Puducherry participated. Unlike any other moot court competitions, law students presented the case and argued in Tamil language.

“Many law students in government colleges write their examination in Tamil and the advocates in lower courts still argue in Tamil. In order to provide a platform for students pursuing their law education in Tamil, we decided to organise a Tamil moot court. In a year, more than 100 moot court competitions are organised in different institutions across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. But, in Puducherry, it is the first time such an initiative is being taken,” said A.Vincent Arputham, Principal, Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Government Law College in Puducherry.

He added that they were planning to make this into an annual event.

Raghavedha Trust, founded by an alumni of Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Government Law College, along with the alumni association, has sponsored this event. Nearly 50 alumni of this college, who were practising law in different places, came together to support the upcoming lawyers.

R. Muralidharan of Raghavedha Trust noted: “The quality of law education has to be enriched. We want to support the law students to acquire requisite skills.”

Starting from January 27, the law students argued over a family dispute in a conservative Vaishnava family. Out of the 20 teams, eight teams were selected for the semi-finals held on Sunday. From the eight teams, two were selected for the final round.

Madras High Court Judges S.Baskaran, K.K.Sasidharan and R.Subramanian distributed the prizes.

SRM School of Law, Chennai, bagged the first place and School of Excellence in Law, Chennai, were the runners up.
