L-G lauds PWD and local bodies for joining the collaborative effort

A total of 86 km of irrigation channels and 18 km of urban drains have been desilted with public- private partnership in the Union Territory, Lt Governor Kiran Bedi said on Monday.

In a communication, Ms. Bedi said the irrigation channels and drains were cleaned without any exchange of money between the government and the donors.

“It has been all voluntary execution with payments made directly to the owners of machinery used for desilting,” the Lt Governor said.

‘Time and money saved’

Complimenting the Public Works Department and local bodies for taking up the initiative under a collaborative programme, the Lt. Governor said the efforts by the government agencies helped in saving money and time.

“The initiative brought in a spirit of combined responsibility. It has benefited the agriculture sector too.”

“The city drains are far cleaner than earlier thanks to the combined efforts,” Ms. Bedi said.

The Lt. Governor said cleaning up the irrigation channels and drains had helped in improving the green cover and making the territory water rich.

Raj Nivas would organise a function on November 4 to felicitate all those involved in the programme, the communication said.
