National Institute of Technology - Puducherry (NITPY) at Karaikal is in the process of augmenting faculty strength before the start of the next academic year. As per the academic calendar, the classes will reopen for B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D programmes on July 16.

Eighteen faculty members will be appointed within a month, in addition to the existing 20, NITPY Director K. Sankaranarayanasamy said.

The institution has received 500 applications, including 15 from candidates who had done their doctorates and undergone training in foreign universities.

The recruitment process will be carried out during the first week of June, he said.

With the augmented strength of teachers, the institute will be able to conform to the prescribed teacher-student ratio of 1:12. The current student strength is close to 600.

The faculty members are to be appointed in the departments of Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

Next year onwards, NITPY will be offering two more M.Tech programmes in EEE and ECE, in addition to the existing M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering.

The institution offers Ph.D. programs in all the five engineering disciplines as also Science and Humanities (Chemistry / English/ Mathematics/ Physics).

In recent months, the NITPY inducted two faculty members - one each in Chemistry and Mechanical departments - under the INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) Scheme of Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi. Faculty members appointed under ASPIRE are eligible to guide Ph.D. candidates, Prof. Sankaranarayanasamy said.

The scheme envisages appointing young faculties in the age group of 27 to 32 years and providing them with attractive opportunities for developing independent scientific profiles and emerging as science and technology leaders in the long term.

The starting salary of these candidates appointed for a five-year duration is higher than that of Assistant Professors.

They are eligible to apply to submit research proposals and secure funding from DST, Prof. Sankaranarayanasamy said.
