V. Sriharan alias Murugan, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, serving sentence in Vellore Central Prison, has denied charges that he was found in possession of two mobile phones and three SIM cards, and has decided to face the case legally.
A prison officer, during rounds, allegedly seized two mobile phones, a charger and three SIM cards from Murugan on March 25. A case has been registered at the Bagayam police station against Murugan.
Murugan’s advocate P. Pugalenthi, who met him at the prison on Tuesday said that he has denied all charges and claimed that the case was foisted on him.
“Murugan said he was performing puja at about 6.30 p.m. on Saturday when a team of prison officers conducted a search in his cell. They did not find anything in the cell during the search but the next day, they filed a case saying they seized mobile phones from him. He said the mobile phones could have been seized elsewhere,” he said, quoting Murugan.
Murugan felt that the case was foisted on him on someone’s instigation. He said it was a “vengeful act.”
“He has decided to face the case legally. He has narrated what happened during the inquiries conducted by the DIG, Prisons and Bagayam police,” Mr. Pugalenthi said.
