Panvel City police have arrested a 22-year-old man who raped and impregnated a 14-year-old girl in his neighbourhood in Koliwada seven months ago.

The accused, Machindra Bhoir, a photographer, was arrested from his house on Friday. He was charged with rape and booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

The police said the victim is seven months pregnant, which is beyond the 20-week legal abortion limit. A police officer said the victim’s parents took her to a doctor after she complained of uneasiness and her stomach started bloating. Doctors confirmed that the girl was pregnant and reported it to the police. The victim then told the police that Mr. Bhoir had raped her.

The officer said, “The victim was usually alone at home as her parents were daily wagers. Mr. Bhoir raped her when her parents were away at work and threatened to harm her if she told anyone about it.”
