BMC closes access road to drain after incident

The body of an 18 year-old youth, who went missing on Sunday, was found in a roadside drain in Malad on Monday. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has shut down the access road towards the nullah after the incident.

The youth, Nagendra Raja, lived in an SRA colony in Evershine Nagar with his mother and brother, Nagraj. He had recently completed his Class X exams. His brother is a college student while his mother works as domestic help.

On Sunday, Nagendra had gone out with friends, but did not return home. “He had gone towards the nullah and must have stayed back after his friends left. Some people said he slipped and fell in, but others said he went in to retrieve a cricket ball. When he did not return home, we started looking for him. Then we heard this news,” said Unnamalai, Nagendra’s aunt. She said his mother was inconsolable.

Nagraj said, “When Nagendra could not be found till late at night, we circulated messages on WhatsApp and Facebook. Everyone was looking for him. Then, someone saw a body floating in the nullah this morning. When my mother heard about it, she rushed there and identified him. Residents of our colony retrieved the body.”

Nagendra was taken to Siddharth Hospital, where he was declared dead. His last rites were held on Monday evening. Nagraj said they will have to check footage from CCTV cameras in nearby buildings to find out what happened.

Sanjog Kabare, Assistant Municipal Commissioner of P North Ward, said, “The body was removed from the drain by residents before the fire brigade reached the spot. It is not known how the youth fell inside. As a precautionary measure, we have blocked the access road for now.”

A senior officer from the Bangur Nagar police station said an accidental death report has been filed.
