The Marine Drive police on Monday detained a youth hailing from Osmanabad for allegedly trying to commit suicide outside the Mantralaya.

According to the Marine Drive police, the youth has been identified as Vinayak Vedpathak (27), a resident of Kalamb village in Osmanabad. Police officials said that around 12.45 p.m., Mr. Vedpathak approached the gate of the Mantralaya, opened a bottle and doused himself with the liquid.

Guards intervene

An officer with the Marine Drive police said, “Personnel posted at the gate noticed Mr. Vedpathak and rushed to stop him. He was restrained and taken to the GT Hospital for a check-up. He was later taken to the Marine Drive police station for further inquiries.”

The officer said that Mr. Vedpathak admitted during questioning that he had taken a loan two years ago from a moneylender in his village to set up his own business. The officer said, “Mr. Vedpathak said the business failed and he was unable to repay the loan. Then the moneylender started harassing him and caused him extreme stress. He later approached local authorities to file a complaint. When no action was taken, he decided to take the extreme step. We are now verifying Mr. Vedpathak’s claims.”

The incident became a political issue with Dhananjay Munde, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, tweeting, “Shame on the government which misled the educated youth by promising them two crore jobs per year. The youth should not commit suicide but instead teach a lesson to the government that drives them to such actions.”

Counselling provided

Deputy Commissioner of Police Manjunath Singe, Mumbai Police spokesperson, said Mr. Vedpathak was released after being given counselling in the evening.
